Living and working on the Cote d’Azur means we can easily visit the snow and skiing for a day from the coast.
When December arrives there seems to be a mass exodus each weekend up to the slopes, particularly for the children who learn to ski early in this area and seem to be fearless.
The slopes provide great entertainment for children and teenagers and great adventures for al, including visitors at this time of year. They have so much to do in February, a month usually regarded as being unseasonal and empty. Far from it. It is well-known that you can ski and be on the Mediterranean coast within the same day, and there are several good ski resorts to visit – Isola 2000, Auron, Greolieres, Valberg, and the lovely little village of Limone in Italy. The coach from Nice airport to Isola 2000 is 4 euros! But if you do decide to drive, probably safer to be in a 4-wheel drive or to have snow chains on your tires as it is a steep incline with snow-covered roads at the top at this time of year. The air is invigorating and wonderful at this height and, even if you don’t ski, there is plenty to experience for the “après-ski” or“off-piste”.
After your activities consider a spa, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, hammam, right up there in the ski resorts. You will love it. There are many organized arrangements for children, but do book in advance if you wish to visit over a weekend. Every parent wants their children to ski, and remember that the earlier they start the better they will be – and frighteningly fearless!
Last Christmas we drove up to Greolieres, through Pont du Loup, home of the famous confisserie, and it took us less than one hour to get to the slopes. I was perturbed that we saw no snow at all on the southern-facing slopes and thought the sun had melted it all away. But, rounding the slope at the very top we found ourselves on the north-facing slopes and hundreds of people skiing. That really shows the difference in sunshine and temperature. We had the roof of the car down the whole day, only putting it up when it got dark after 5pm for the journey down the mountain and back to home.
