36% of wealthy people considering leaving UK

… according to a Lloyds TSB survey published yesterday.

Against the current economic backdrop, new research raises concerns that many wealthy people are considering leaving the UK. Some 36% of people with more than GBP250,000 of savings and investments would like to move abroad. 14% say they are likely to leave in the next two years.

The survey of wealthy individuals was commissioned by Lloyds TSB International Wealth in the first of a new series of reports about wealthy people’s attitudes to emigration.

High taxes are cited as one of the key reasons for wealthy people to consider a move overseas — some 35% of respondents said tax rates may prompt them to leave the UK. The only more common selections were the weather (44%) and crime and antisocial behavior (43%).

The highest proportion of wealthy leavers want to come to France.

Brits buying more holiday homes than in 2006

Out today, we hear that holiday home buys by Brits have increased by around 50,000 from 2006 to 2010 according to a new report by an international property consultancy.

The survey, jointly produced by a sales agency and a lettings website, said that whereas some 385,000 British citizens owned holiday homes in 2006, 430,000 were recorded in 2010.

The report Author says ” “It’s even more surprising because some previous owners will have sold in the interim, so the net increase means there has been a sizeable number of Britons buying since 2006.”

We, here at French Riviera Property Search, know that many foreigners seeking the ‘good life’ of great food, great (cheaper) wine, and great weather will seek out our beautiful area.

Tax changes? Make that offer on your French Riviera Property NOW.

Tax Changes

Tax Changes September 2011

New tax legislation has been announced meaning that much higher levels of Capital Gains Tax will be payable by those selling a property in France which is not their principal residence.

Introduced by President Sarkozy as part of the new austerity measures the changes will affect those owning an investment property or second home in France.

Currently, the tax payable on the sale of a second home or investment property, owned by an individual, diminishes to 0% after 15 years of ownership, however from February 2012 the 15 year rule is to be replaced by a less generous one over 30 years.

The tax on second homes will now be calculated on the sale price minus the purchase price originally paid, plus an allowance for inflation. The tax rate is 19% for non-French EU residents but plus social charges of 13.5% for French residents.

What does this mean for those trying to sell a property? To avoid the increased charges, it has been estimated that  the initial sale contracts will need to be signed no later than 30th November in order to ensure that the sale is processed by the 31st January 2012.

What does this mean for those buying a property? The difference in the amounts payable may mean that owners are more anxious to sell or that they may now consider a more attractive offer so that they can sell prior to the tax increases.

It is now more important than ever that if you are buying property here you take specialist advice on HOW to buy your property. Personal circumstances are different in each case and our specialist knowledge and links to tax, legal and financial professionals will ensure that there are no nasty tax surprises for you or your family in the years to come. The Cannes market at beginning of September

It is always such fun to go to the large food market in Cannes – there’s nothing to eat which cant be bought there and the taste is delicious.

Visitors always ask why the fish section is next to the flower section.  We say “what does fresh fish smell of?  If it smells of fish it can’t be fresh!”.  The whole section is hosed down at the end of every morning, by which time the counters are bare.

Meanwhile the change of seasons is always noticed with the fresh produce always on display – now we have an amazing selection of tomatoes and salads and all the autumn fruits now available – melons, grapes, peaches, etc – indeed any and every kind of food you could possibly want and all the freshest possible.  We are always impressed by the taste of fruit and vegetables, ripened in the sun, sold freshly gathered and still with the flowers on the ends – i.e. cucumbers, courgettes (zucchinis), strawberries, etc.  How much fresher can it be than just gathered that morning and tasting superb.

Always a large selection of fresh growing herbs; locally made fresh bread; an incredible counter of home-made pastas, and an amazing long counter containing a huge selection of local hard and soft cheeses, creams, and local butter.

Here are some photos I took today:

So, join us and enjoy this wonderful food every day.

No more butts on the beach?

(with thanks to HM of Riviera Times)

Already it is illegal in enclosed public spaces in France and now it looks as if smokers could be outlawed from lighting up on beaches up and down the French Riviera, as well as in its bars, cafes and airports.

Provence & Côte d’Azur: Huge public support for a smoking ban on beaches in France as first non-smoking beach is opened in the PACA region.

A survey just published has shown that three in four French people are in favour of a ban on smoking on beaches. That’s three-quarters of the population!

42% of respondents said that they were strongly in favour to such a measure being implemented, and only 9% were strongly opposed to the idea.
It would seem that the mayor of La Ciotat in the Bouches-du-Rhône is already one step ahead on the game, having already introduced a non-smoking beach. According to the town’s deputy mayor, the new initiative, put in place as a result of the local authorities receiving requests for more child-friendly areas, is proving popular so far.
On Saturday, Italy followed France when a section of Bibione beach, near Venice, was made the first test site for Italian non-smoking public beaches. HM

I, Jackie Pressman, will keep an eye on this and see what happens.

Nice airport figures

Thought you might like to consider the figures for Nice airport – just out today.  Traffic was up 9.6% for the first half of 2011.  And, interestingly, July 2011 was the busiest month EVER – in the history of Nice airport.
Nice airport serves 55 airlines and 103 destinations.

UK Riots

What terrible and frightening news every day this week about the rioting and damage throughout the UK.  My daughter tells me it is now calm across London but of course we are concerned that it has not been totally stopped yet in other cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. What happened is unbelievable, literally inconceivable, but it does look as though the government is taking action to prevent recurrences and are not being complacent in their vigilance.

However the far more serious issue is why this happened in the first place and whether the Goverment will be able to do anything sufficiently radical to address the core issues in play.

Unfortunately noticeable is that on every single hight-street which has been ransacked the one type shop not been broken into, without exception, is bookshops – a telling indictment on the state of this country and the priorities of youth!

… and we are still concerned about the effect on the coming Olympics.

The amazing mix of Americans here on the French Riviera

My husband, Burton Gintell, is the President of The American Club of the Riviera, and we noticed just how many states from which Americans have travelled to be here.

The Americans we know here hail from New York, California, Wisconsin, Indiana, New Jersey, Vermont, Texas, Illinois, Missouri, North Dakota, Washington DC, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Florida, etc. etc.

It is well known that the Americans who live in, or have second homes here in France, seem to gravitate to Paris or the French Riviera (the Cote d’Azur). Once here on the Riviera they follow the footsteps of those Americans who created the summer seasons of the 1920s – Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald; Gerald & Sarah Murphy; Cole Porter; Ernest Hemingway; Isadora Duncan and all those who followed – and love the many different areas of sea and/or French Provencal country atmospheres.

I recommend “Americans and the Making of the Riviera” by Michael Nelson.
